Have you spotted the giant Havanias?

Slippers that might fit the BFG (Big Friendly Giant)

Home-made goodness

Making your own meal is an experience nothing short of gratifying.

The colours, the smells, the mmm-so-good feeling that comes with each mouthful.

When I cook alone, I pretend I am demonstrating on a cookshow, expounding on the finer points of the culinary art to my invisible audience.

Here's a little of what went on in Min's cookshow today:

Brocolli flowers blanched in hot water and put to steam
+
Fresh salmon marinated in salt and lemon juice
Cooked under low heat with a (smalll) knob of butter
+
Potatoes boiled till able to put a fork through
+
Along, with finely sliced shitake mushrooms, diced zucchinis (and a secret ingredient)
=

A satisfying salmon lunch

Would you like to try it too?
(I mean try cooking it)

Table for one

There are days where I find myself alone and hungry. I have no qualms about eating alone at my favourite restaurant, but most of the time, if the time and ingredients allow, I would much rather cook my meal.

Fried brown rice with brocolli, asparagus and pumpkin

Yong Tau Foo noodles with lots of beansprouts and caixin

My specialty - Pasta with homemade tomato sauce and beef

The challenge is always not to overcook since my training with mom has always been for a table of six. These days, I am getting better at it - a table for one.

But there is nothing quite like a meal with good company. A table for two perhaps?

Wessex Estate photography excursion (2)

The photography excursion to Wessex Estate was a discovery of sorts. I learnt a lot more about my camera as I walked through this charming little estate set in dreamlike tranquility. One can walk through this place guided by numbers of all shapes, sizes, and colours!

There is a famous eatery called 'Colbar' right at 9A Whitchurch Road.  Personally, I don't recommend it unless you wish to drink beer. There is Laurent Bernard Cafe and Chocolate Bar that I hope to visit the next time. I would add the art galleries into my visiting itinerary too.

Getting there is a slight challenge for public transport users, but I have since found that there is a direct bus 191 from the bus stop opposite Buona Vista MRT.

I think you will like it there, so do visit!

Selamat Hari Raya

It is a national holiday in Singapore today - Hari Raya Adilfitri. It is to celebrate the end of the month of fasting for Muslims. It is a happy day for all Singaporeans for we too get an extra day to play!

Recipe to a great national holiday:

1. Wake at 6.30am to run & play tennis with great friends

2. Change picnic plans to Jones the Grocer when it rains.
Order French Earl Grey Tea, Sourdough toast with Scramble Eggs
Add an avocado and mushrooms as sides
And a Scone with Raspberry Jam and Butter

One of my childhood friends - fen

3. Receive a present that shows a photo of 3 of us at 12 years old.
(Yes, there is one more childhood friend - JH)

4. Buy a little-elephant-balancing-apples toy

5. Visit the National Museum and find out how very lucky you are!

Relativity

Sit next to a pretty girl for an hour,
it seems like a minute.
Sit on a red-hot stove for a minute,
it seems like an hour.
That's relativity.

Sounds like music

I just started my first lesson at my grand age.

I can now  play a very slow version of 'Jesus Loves Me'. When I heard the music forming itself from the ivory keys, I felt like how I felt the first time I made a car move. It made me smile and I could not stop smiling.

I hope to play a real nice song for you, someday.

Home, sweet home

My favourite food - Mama's

One of the best things in life, would probably be to
come home to the smell of Mom's cooking and
settling down to a hot dinner and
freshly brewed soup at the end of a work day.

To be able to come home to dinner with the family
is a privilege of the recent months.

Mom's winter melon's soup

As I changed into my home clothes before dinner today,
I realised that my mom had ironed it.

As I ate my dinner and drank my mom's soup,
I realised how very many years she has been cooking and
taking care of all aspects of our lives.

A quiet love, indeed.
